Read the school statement regarding Cesar Chavez Day Repeal.
Update 3/23/2016
As the Board of Directors and school leadership of Academia Cesar Chavez, we have initiated a community-driven process to rename our school—one that reflects our shared values, honors our students and families, and moves us forward with integrity. This work comes at a time when our community is carrying deep pain, including the impact of recent reports of harm and the ongoing strain felt by students, families, and staff. Our responsibility remains clear: to center the safety, dignity, and emotional well-being of our community while listening with intention and acting with care.
We honor the courage of survivors who have spoken out, including Dolores Huerta, and stand firmly in support of all those whose voices demand accountability, respect, and justice. Guided by our values—Identity, Solidarity, Intellect, and Justice—we are committed to responding in ways that reflect both truth and healing, even when that path is difficult.
In alignment with these values, we stand in solidarity with the repeal of César Chávez Day. This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring that what we honor publicly aligns with the lived experiences, safety, and dignity of our community. Our hope is that Minnesota doesn’t just simply repeal the official day but that it commits itself to the original intent of the law: to honor the human dignity of the men and women who work our agricultural fields to put food on our tables and strengthen the agricultural sector that help makes MN a prosperous state.
We, at the school, will continue engaging our community in a thoughtful and inclusive process to move forward together with clarity, respect, and collective purpose.
